Box Office: "Mission: Impossible" Outwits "Sherlock Holmes"

Ringing in the holiday by grabbing ahold of first place status, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" shot to the number one spot at the box office over the Christmas weekend of December 24-26, 2011.

The Tom Cruise spearheaded action caper pulled in $9.7 million on Friday and $5.6 million on Saturday while expected to garner a total of $26.5 million during its second weekend of release.

Situated in the runner-up slot is the Guy Ritchie directed sequel "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," as the Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr fronted film pulled in $10.5 million over Friday and Saturday with an estimated weekend take of $18.5 million.

Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated weekend totals are the family friendly film "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" ($13.7 million), along with the much-hyped picture "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ($13 million) and theatrical newcomer "The Adventures Of Tintin" ($9 million).

Also of note, the just-released Scarlett Johansson/Matt Damon movie "We Bought a Zoo" finds itself in the sixth position while on track to close out opening weekend with $8.5 million.
