"The Lion King 3D" Tops "Contagion"




Showing the strong continued interest in the classic family tale, "The Lion King 3D" is on track to triumph at the box office over the weekend of September 16-18, 2011.

The animal based Disney picture pulled in $8.825 million in ticket sales on opening day while expected to garner as much as $25 million on opening weekend.

Knocked from its box office leading status after one week of theatrical dominance was "Contagion," as the Steven Soderbergh directed Warner Bros. thriller fell to second with $4.63 million on Friday en route to an anticipated weekend pull of $12 million.

Rounding out the top five at the box office in estimated weekend totals are Ryan Gosling's film "Drive" ($11 million), followed by fourth and fifth place holders "The Help" ($9 million) and "Straw Dogs" ($8 million).
