Born in suburban Washington, DC, for a German opera singer and voice teacher, Bullock grew up mostly in the road. He studied music and dance when he traveled throughout Europe, and made his first stage at the age of 5 in a minor role for the opera in Nuremberg, Germany. The performance helped him to develop a love of the stage, and he began appearing regularly in the choir of children Nuremberg. When Bullock was 12, his family moved back to the DC area, where he attended Washington-Lee High School. Bullock no problem fitting in, being involved in cheerleading and school theater productions until graduating in 1982. Bullock then enrolled at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, to study acting, but left college just three credits shy bachelor's degree. Instead, he moved to New York in 1986 to pursue acting in earnest. He joined the Neighborhood Playhouse Theatre, where she took acting classes and supported himself by working waitress and bartending.
